Clan Macarthur and Arthur of Argyllshire, Scotland; one of the oldest clans of that county, some historians consider this Arthur to be the saviour of the Celts, the legendary King Arthur, a Pictish leader rather than a Welsh or Cornish Celt. Clan Chief Mac-Ic-Artair was rewarded with confiscated lands in Argyll after aiding Robert the Bruce. A branch settled in Skye where they became hereditary pipers to Clan Macdonald of Sleat. Due to their ownership of vast amounts of lands, other clans rose against them and Clan Chief Duncan Macarthur and his son were drowned in Loch Awe in 1567. These opposing clans were forced to pay compensation to the Macarthurs by the Earl of Argyll. The Clan fought on both sides during the Jacobite Rebellion. The Macarthurs are noted for their success overseas, and John Macarthur who was military commandant of Parramatta until 1804, founded the Australian wool industry and his sons planted the first Australian vineyards.
