MacLaren
Clan Maclaren of Balquhiddar, Perthshire, Scotland. Descended from Laurence, Abbot of Achtow in Balquhiddar, living 13th century. They swore allegiance to Edward I of England in 1296. Their lands were seized by the Scottish Crown in 1490, and in 1500 James IV granted the lands to his mistress, Janet Kennedy, and later to the Murrays of Athol and then to the Macgregors. They were listed as an unruly clan in 1587 and 1594. They fought for Charles I in the Civil War and for both the Old and the young Pretender.
Arms: Or, two chevronels gules, in base a lymphad sails furled and oars in action sable.
Crest: A lion's head erased sable, crowned with an antique crown or, between two branches of laurel erect proper.
Motto: (Below): Creag an Tuirc (The boar's rock); (above): Ab origine fidus (Faithful from the first).
