Bruce
Bruce
Clan Bruce of Annandale, Scotland; descended from Adam de Brus who built a castle at Brix in Normandy, France in the 11th century. His son Robert de Brus accompanied William the Conqueror to England. in 1066. A descendant became a companion of the future King David I of Scotland and was rewarded with lands in Annandale, but was forced to relinquish them to his second son Robert, when he refused to join David against King Stephen during the First English Civil War. He instead fought for Stephen and took his own son prisoner at the Battle of Standard in 1138. When the younger Robert returned to Scotland, he abandoned his father’s arms of a red lion on a silver field and assumed the now familiar red saltire. Following a bitter struggle against rival claimant John Baliol and against Edward I of England, Robert Bruce was finally crowned King of Scotland in 1306 after he had murdered John Comyn.
