Clan Hunter of Hunterston, Ayrshire, Scotland; these lands were officially granted to the tenth laird, William Hunter by King Robert II, 2nd May 1374, ‘for his faithful service rendered and to be rendered to us in return for a silver penny payable to the Sovereign at Hunterston on the Feast of Pentecost’. The present laird still keeps silver pennies in case of a Royal Visit. Descended from William Hunter, who signed as Venator.
