Clan Macfarlane of that Ilk and Arroquhar (Arrochar), Dumbartonshire, Scotland. Descended from Alwyn, the Pictish Earl of Lennox, whose younger son Gilchrist received lands at Arrochar on the shores of Loch Long at the end of the twelfth century. The first Clan chief was Parlan, son of Malduin and great grandson of Gilchrist. Iain Macpharlain received a charter for his lands at Arrochar in 1420. Duncan Macpharlain was the last Pictish Earl of Lennox and was executed by King James I of Scotland and the title was given to John Stewart, Lord Darnley. The eleventh Clan chief died at the Battle of Flodden in 1513. Andrew Macfarlane, the 14th Chief fought against Mary, Queen of Scots at the Battle of Langside in 1568, and the crest and motto of the arms was granted for his gallantry in the defence of the Crown of the infant James VI. The Clan supported against Cromwell and also William and Mary against James II and VII.
