Clan Carnegie of that Ilk, Scotland. Descended from John de Balinhard, who was granted the lands of Carnegie in 1358 by Walter de Maule. Duthac de Carnegie acquired lands at Kinnaird in Forfarshire circa 1401, and was confirmed to them by Robert, Duke of Albany, Governor of Scotland, in a charter of 21st February 1409. Duthac was killed at the Battle of Harlaw in 1411. John Carnegie of Kinnaird was killed at the Battle of Flodden in September 1513. Sir David Carnegie, born in 1575, was created Lord Carnegie of Kinnaird in April 1616, and was made Earl of Southesk in June 1633. James, the fifth Earl supported the 1715 Jacobite Rising and was attained by Parliament. The elventh Earl who, as Lord Carnegie, married Her Highness Princess Maude, younger daughter of the Princess Royal and grandaughter of Edward VII. On her death, their son, inherited the dukedom of Fife, the title of his maternal grandfather.
