Clan Strange or Strang of Pitcorthie in Fifeshire, Scotland. Descended from France and probably in person from Home le Estraunge who was in the service of King Alexander III in 1255. The family have kept the basis of their arms which was used in France long before the Norman Conquest. Thomas de Strang held land near Aberdeen in 1340 and John Strang married, circa 1362, Cecilia, sister of Richard Anstruther of that Ilk, and received lands at Balcaskie. John Strang of Balcaskie sold the estate in 1615. Sir Robert Strange descended from a younger son of Balcaskie who settled in Orkney circa 1660, was Life Guard to Prince Charles Edward Stuart in 1745 until after the Battle of Culloden. The chief was officially recognised by Lord Lyon by Letters of Patent, 20th February 1995 to Major Timothy Strange of Balcaskie, Little Holme in Amesbury, Wiltshire, England.
Arms: Argent, a chevron between three lozenges sable.
Crest: Dexter, on a wreath argent and sable, a cluster of grapes proper, sinister, on a wreath argent and sable, a castle proper, masoned sable.
Motto: Dexter, Dulce quod utile (That which is useful is sweet); sinister, Stet fortuna domus (The good fortune of the house stands).
