Clan Kerr, Ker, Carr, or Carre, originally from the Norse Kjrr, descended from brothers Ralph and Robert aka John Carre originally of Normandy, France, who settled Lancashire, England at the time of the Conquest and thence to Roxburgh, Scotland. The senior branch of the family, the Kerrs of Fernichurst (Barons Oxham, 1502 and Jedburgh, 1621, Earls of Ancram, 1626 and Lothian, 1631, Marquesses of Lothian, 1650) descend from Ralph and the Kerrs of Cessford descend from John (Barons Newbattle, 1591, Earls of Lothian, 1606, extinct, 1624, Earls of Roxburgh, 1616, Dukes of Roxburghe, 1707).
