Clan Johnstone of Scotland; settled originally in Annandale where they became one of the most powerful Border clans, first recorded in 1194 with Gilbert, son of John Johnstone. Sir John Johnston submitted to Edward I of England in 1296. Adam Johnstone became Laird of Johnstone in 1412 and fought at the Battle of Sark in 1448; his son was rewarded with Douglas lands at Buittle and Sannoch for his part in suppressing the Douglas rebellion.
