Clan Maule of Scotland. A surname of Norman origin, from Maule in France. It is believed that a younger son of the Sieur de Maule accompanied William the Conqueror on his invasion of England in 1066 and was granted manors in Yorkshire.
Arms: Per pale argent and gules, a bordure charged with eight escallops all counterchanged.
Crest: A dragon sable (Nisbet gives it vert), spouting out fire at mouth and tail.
Motto: Inest clementia forti (Mercy is inherent in the brave).
