Gayre
Clan Gayre of that Ilk, Scotland; originally from Gayre Manor in Cornwall, England, they settled in Ross-shire in 1649 and secured the lands of Nigg through marriage to the Macculloch heiress, Katherine. In 1679, the 4th Laird of Nigg, Thomas Gayre, a prosperous merchant became Chancellor of Ross. During the 18th century the family were Dissenters in the Church, and built their own chapel which was eventually seized and torn down by Lord Akerville.
Arms: Quarterly, 1st and 4th, argent, a fleur-de-lis sable, in the dexter chief point a mullet vert (Gayre); 2nd and 3rd, ermine, a fret engrailed gules(McCulloch of Nigg).
Crest: Issuing from a crest coronet or, of four (three visible) strawberry leaves, a mount vert.
Motto: Super astra spero (I hope beyond the stars)
