Clan Macgillivray of the Isles and Dunmaglas, Scotland; derived from the Gaelic Clann Mhic FGillebrath and descended from Gillivray who was driven from his lands by King Alexander II in 1222 and joined the Clan Chattan Confederation. By 1609 the clan was represented by both Malcolm of Dalcrombie and Duncan Macfarquhar of Dunmaglas. As Jacobites, they fought in both uprisings, and in 1745, Alexander Macgillivray led Clan Chattan against the Hanoverian army at the Battle of Culloden where he and much of his clan were killed. After Culloden, many of the clan settled in Canada where William Macgillivray became head of the Canadian Northwest Company and member of the Legislative Council of Lower Canada. The estates in Dunmaglas were sold off in 1890.
Arms: Quarterly,1st, or, a cat-a-mountain sejant guardant proper, his dexter fore-paw on the ground, his sinister fore-paw in a guardant posture and his tail reflexed under his sinister paw; 2nd, argent, a dexter hand couped at the wrist apaumy gules; 3rd, azure, a salmon naiant argent; 4th, or, a galley sailing sinister-wise azure, its oars in saltire and falgged gules.
Crest: A cat-a-mountain as afore blazoned for the first quarter of the field.
