Clan Mackintosh of that Ilk, and Tor Castle, Inverness-shire, Scotland; claims to be chief of the Clan Chattan in opposition to the Macphersons; descended from Shaw (died 1179), first chief and second son of Duncan Macduff, Earl of Fife, who accompanied King Malcolm IV in 1160 to suppress a rebellion. The fifth chief, William the Lion fought against King Haakon of Norway at the Battle of Largs in 1263; he was killed in a duel in 1265. His infant son Angus was raised on Islay and in 1291 married Eva, heiress of Dougal Dal, Chief of Clan Chattan. Clan Chattan thereafter became a confederation of clans led by the Mackintoshes. Sir Æneas Mackintosh, of Mackintosh, was created a baronet in 1812, died without issue. in 1820. Sir James Mackintosh of Kellachie, Inverness-shire, the distinguished orator and statesman, was representative of this branch.
Arms: Quarterly, 1st, or, a lion rampant gules, armed and langued azure; 2nd, argent a dexter hand fesseways couped at the wrist and holding a human heart gules; 3rd, azure a boar's head couped or, armed proper and langued gules; 4th or, a lymphad her sails furled azure, flagged and her oars in saltire gules.
Crest: A cat-a-mountain sailant guardant proper.
Motto: Over the crest Touch not the cat, bot a glove; under: Loch Moigh.
