Clan Macnab of that Ilk, Scotlland; descended from Mac An Aba (meaning child of the abbot). According to tradition, the progenitor of this clan was Abraruadh, the Abbot of Glendochart and Strathearn, the younger son of King Kenneth Macalpine. Abraruadh, the Red Abbot, was descended from King Fergus of Dalriada and a nephew of St. Fillan, founder of the monastery in Glendochart in the seventh century. Malcolm de Glendochart submitted to Edward I of England in the Ragman Roll of 1296. Angus Macnab was brother-in-law of John Comyn murdered in 1306 by King Robert the Bruce, and later took up arms against the king. With Bruce’s victory at Bannockburn in 1314, the Macnab lands were confiscated and their charters destroyed. In 1336, Angus Macnab received a charter of lands from King David II.
Arms: Sable, on a chevron argent, three crescents vert, in base an open boat with oars in action on a sea in base undy, argent and azure.
Crest: The head of a savage affrontee proper.
Motto: Timor omnis abesto (Let fear be far from all).
